Strategic & Management

  • Assessment of risk acceptance according to underwriting guidelines.
  • Negotiate and determine optimal terms of insurance policies with Business Unit or Intermediaries.
  • Provide underwriting input in arranging an adequate reinsurance treaty to protect the policyholders' and shareholders’ interests.
  • Input to establish underwriting policies for commercial lines (Property & Misc.) products to achieve growth and profit objectives.
  • Input to design, develop, and introduce new products.
  • Ensure all Policy Wordings, Proposal Forms, and technical documentation are reviewed regularly and updated promptly, and remain current and relevant.

Business Operations

  • Provide technical support for junior underwriters and branches.
  • Ensure effective and efficient administration of day-to-day business operations in line with SOP across all support functions.

Compliance

  • Ensure consistency with enterprise risk management guidelines.
  • Ensure compliance with regulations and laws.
  • Ensure good corporate governance is practiced and is being exercised by the department.

People Management

  • Build a team that attracts and retains talent to ensure critical business processes are highly efficient and effective.
  • Ensure regular communication of key imperatives.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, business, finance, economics, risk management, or a related field.

  • A master’s degree (e.g., MBA) is advantageous but not always required.

  • Professional Certifications (preferred but not always mandatory)

    • CPCU – Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter

    • AU – Associate in Commercial Underwriting

    • ACII – Advanced Diploma in Insurance (UK)

    • CIP – Chartered Insurance Professional (Canada)

  • 5–8+ years of experience in commercial lines underwriting (property, casualty, liability, etc.).

  • Proven ability to underwrite complex commercial risks and manage portfolios.

  • At least 2–3 years in a leadership or supervisory role within underwriting or a related area.

  • Deep knowledge of:

    • Commercial insurance products and risk types (e.g., property, liability, marine, engineering)

    • Underwriting guidelines and regulatory frameworks

    • Risk selection, pricing models, and portfolio management

    • Reinsurance concepts and risk transfer

  • Proficiency in underwriting tools, rating systems, and data analytics platforms.

  • Strong team management and mentoring abilities.

  • Ability to develop and implement underwriting strategies and ensure alignment with company goals.

  • Effective communication and negotiation skills (especially with brokers and clients).

  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving.

  • High attention to compliance and risk appetite controls.

  • Solid understanding of local and regional commercial insurance markets.

  • Awareness of emerging risks affecting commercial clients (e.g., cyber, climate, supply chain).

  • Broker and distribution channel management experience is often a plus.
